Weather postpones opening of bike lanes

The City of Thunder Bay says road crews are still sweeping lanes free of sand and debris.

THUNDER BAY — Bicycle lanes will open later than usual in Thunder Bay this spring.

Typically, they are officially declared open on May 1, after city road crews have finished sweeping sand and debris that accumulated over the winter.

But the city reported Monday that a prolonged period of cold, wet weather has delayed the process, and that cyclists should wait for an announcement about when lanes have been cleared.

Once sweeping has been completed, on-street parking restrictions affecting designated bike lanes will be enforced.

The city reminded drivers not to obstruct bike lanes with their vehicles.

Residents who have questions about street-sweeping in their neighbourhood may contact the city's dispatch line at 807-625-2195.
