THUNDER BAY – The sound of apples being bit into could be heard all around St. Ann School on Thursday afternoon.

Classes took part in The Great Big Crunch event as they joined fellow students across Thunder Bay and around the country in an event that highlights nutrition month.

“This is an initiative to spread awareness about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating in school,” said Myra Hupet, a special education teacher and acting principal at St. Ann.

“We realize that not all students and families are as fortunate as others, and we’re hopeful that our participation today in The Great Big Crunch spreads the message about how important it is to have healthy food in our schools.”

Grade 4 student Joash Mabhaudhi was among those taking part in the event.

While apples aren’t his number one choice, he does enjoy eating fruits and vegetables.

“Bananas and watermelons are my favourite,” Mabhaudhi said.

“I love the flavour of watermelons and with bananas I like the peels, because it’s a bit funny to see someone slip on one.”

The apples for Thursday’s event were sourced and delivered by Belluz Farms and were provided by the Canadian Red Cross Student Nutrition Program.

The Great Big Crunch is an annual event where students, teachers and others around schools have an apple or another crunchy fruit or vegetable in support of healthy school food.

“With this and other food initiatives at our school, it helps to spread that awareness and our students can go back to their homes and into their community to help others with what they learned,” Hupet said.

Over 300,000 students across Canada took part in Thursday’s event.
