THUNDER BAY – The blast of winter weather in Northwestern Ontario is affecting everything, including getting food to those in need for Easter weekend.

The Regional Food Distribution Association (RFDA) continues to work around the conditions and keep up with the demand of their food banks, feeding programs and partners.

“The snowstorm has thrown a wrinkle into our plans to get the food out in time,” said Volker Kromm, RFDA executive director.

“We will do our best to get the job done. We just received a great donation from Second Harvest and we really appreciate that.”

The donation was announced on March 13 with Second Harvest providing 26 pallets of dry non-perishable food, which is equal to 28,500 pounds of nourishment, that will help support the fight against food insecurity and prevent Northern First Nation communities from food shortages.

“There is always a challenge to keep up with the basics, or staples of food, that we normally have and there aren’t really any substitutes. After the Easter weekend, we're going to be reviewing what we have and gearing up for our next big food drive to replenish the shelves," Kromm added.

Those staples include canned goods, pasta and sauce, powdered milk and boxed macaroni and cheese.

Kromm noted that the next big drive will be in May and will involve help from Canada Post workers.

Donations can be made at the Regional Food Distribution Association location at 570 South Syndicate Avenue or online here.
