THUNDER BAY -- It was a grand old hospital, which played a very significant role in the community.  And now, plans are underway to honour and remember the former Port Arthur General Hospital.

In 2004, the hospital closed its doors after about 70 years of service to Thunder Bay. In 2010, the six-storey building at the corner of Algoma and Clavet Streets was demolished.

One of the hospital's nursing graduates, Shirley King, is now the chair of the PAGH monument committee.

She says when the old building was being torn down, she asked for the three stones, depicting a G and H and the Rod of Asclepius.

The group hopes to construct the monument in front of the new hospital, featuring those three stones.

King says it will pay tribute to the hospital's key contributions.

Kings adds that they have already started a $50,000 fundraising campaign for the monument.

The next event will be a fashion show this Sunday afternoon at the Victoria Inn.
