THUNDER BAY -- The United Way campaign has hit the $2 million mark, but there is less than two weeks left to raise the last of this year’s target.

The 2014 campaign chair Michael Nitz accepted a $10,000 cheque from Resolute Forest Products Friday morning, putting the campaign just over $2 million.

This year’s goal is $2.6 million.

“These dollars are going to go a long way in helping one in three people in Thunder Bay through 29 agencies in 63 programs,” said Nitz.

With just a couple of weeks left to reach their goal, Nitz said they're optimistic as they’re expecting more employee campaigns and corporate donations.

“It’s a fight to the finish to see if we meet our goal and can have the most impact here in Thunder Bay,” he said.

But Nitz added he’s feeling optimistic because he knows Thunder Bay steps up when necessary.

The Resolute donation was double what the company donated last year and general manager of the Thunder Bay operations Terry Skiffington said each year Resolute allocates a specific amount of money to give back to the community.

They chose to give this amount to the United Way because they have a long history of working with the charitable organization.

“United Way is one of those organizations we count on and we trust that the money will be put to very good use,” said Skiffington.
