THUNDER BAY -- The Ontario government is celebrating the contribution of local food producers around the North.

The Premier's Awards for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence were handed out in Thunder Bay Tuesday, and a Murillo company received one of the honours.

The premier's awards recognize agricultural companies that contribute to the creation of new products, add value to existing products, and help support job creation while building the provincial economy.

Dave Challen was one of award recipients for his product, Boreal Birch Syrup.

The Murillo-based company has been producing syrup by tapping area birch trees for the past decade.

Challen received the innovation award for their newly-installed reverse osmosis filtration unit.

There were four other regional award recipients, coming from Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin and Timiskaming.
