Emily Cross is one smart teenager.

The Hammarskjold High School student is one of 12 budding young scientists named to Team Canada and will represent the country at the Intel international Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May.

It’s a first for not only Thunder Bay, but Northwestern Ontario.

She’ll join more than 1,400 students from 60 countries around the world, vying for the top prize of a $75,000 university scholarship.
Three secondary $50,000 scholarships are also up for grabs.

Cross will present her project, Patination of Raw Lithic Materials for Analysis of Prehistoric Artifacts, which she’s spent nine months perfecting, looking into research on the chemical and physical analysis of ancient stone tools.

The youngster was chosen from a pool of 500 hopefuls, representing the best high school science fair projects in Canada and had to go through an intense submission and interview process.

The Grade 9 student has been competing in science fairs since Grade 3.

She’s won best-in-beginner and best-in-junior prizes at the Northwestern Ontario Regional Science Fair and has represented Canada the past two years at the Canada Wide Science Fair.

“Last year she won a coveted gold medal at the CWSF, placing in the top 10 scientists in her age category,” Lakehead Public Schools spokesman Bruce Nugent said in a release.

As a result she won a $4,000 university entrance scholarship, $700 in cash and a smart phone.
