Dean Brody has learned there is something special about the relationship Canadian country musicians have with their audience.

Brody, born in British Columbia but now living in Nova Scotia, believes it’s how the music relates to the Canadian audience that creates such a strong following with his legions of fans.

“They know we’re from here. We’re singing about this country and not talking about southern Alabama,” he said in a recent phone interview. “You know that artist has a closer connection to your upbringing and where you live and what you do.”

That loyal following is propelling Brody, along with fellow Canadian country music superstar Paul Brandt, to team up as they make their way across the country for their Road Trip Tour.

Thunder Bay lands right in the middle of their 22-city co-headlining tour, which will see the pair, along with Jess Moskaluke, take the stage at the Community Auditorium on Oct. 10.

Brody and Brandt are treating the situation like a hockey team with two elite goaltenders – alternating starters.

“We’re going market by market and trying to trade off to do a 50-50 thing across the country which is pretty cool,” he said. “I think our shows are so different and I think it’s kind of neat getting up earlier in the night. The fans are raring to go and it’s been awesome. I didn’t know a co-headlining tour would be this much fun.”

This summer the 40-year-old Brody has been tearing up the Canadian country charts with a smash hit single from his newest Album Gypsy Road, which was released in April.

That song, Bring Down The House soared to No. 1 on the SoundScan Country Singles in August, but nearly didn’t even make the album.

“We just had fun with it. We actually thought it should be a bonus track because it was a bit different,” Brody said. “I guess Crop Circles was the only other one that’s close to it and it’s frantic pace. It’s become huge. It’s something we took a risk on and the fans love it.”

He said the set list will feature new songs from Gypsy Road, such as Upside Down, but also crowd-pleasing favourites such as Canadian Girls, Bounty and It’s Friday, which span the last six years of his career.

“When a song first comes out it’s something that resonates. That’s when it resonates loudest,” Brody said.

“You have songs you might pull back a bit, the newest hit might be bigger and louder and the response will be louder. But you have others that don’t ever drop back at all.”
