THUNDER BAY -- Rinks and hills waiting for winter aren't too concerned about the mild weather just yet.

City marina park operations coordinator Kathy Ball said the waterfront rink is expected to open Nov. 23, the latest start to the season ever so far but it hasn't kept people away from Prince Arthur's Landing to take a walk or head to events.

"Everyone is still coming they're just not skating yet," she said.

The ice plant is up and running but rain keeps melting what's being made.

"It's actually working pretty hard right now but the rain is not helping," she said.

Over at Mount Baldy Ski Area, owner Craig Spiess said he's not too worried despite the lack of snow.

"This is kind of normal. I don't mind this," he said standing next to a quiet snow gun.

"We only need maybe five days at -10 and to stay at -10 and we'll be fine."

All the rain is actually filling the pond Mount Baldy uses to make snow, a silver lining Spiess said. He's hoping to have the hill open for the first week of December.
