THUNDER BAY - Well there were no bucking bulls, cowboys, or lassos, but one north side elementary school held a rodeo earlier this past week with the help of some community partners.

The concept was developed by Safe Cycling Thunder Bay, an EcoSuperior program, as a way of certifying instructors who can teach children best practices for riding.

The group has trained and certified Thunder Bay Police officers, city staff, members of the Health Unit, and teachers in both the public and Catholic school boards as Rodeo Instructors.

They teach kids how to check their bikes for safety, properly wear a helmet, and obey the rules of the road.

Afterwards, the newly confident riders put their skills to the test, riding around their neighbourhood.

Reps with Safe Cycling Thunder Bay say feedback from the Bike Rodeo program will be delivered to Cycling Canada for possible national use.

This bike rodeo was just one of 10 paid for through the Healthy Kids Community Challenge.
