THUNDER BAY - Four Thunder Bay schools are officially known as Healthy Schools.

They each received their certifications after a year-long process conducted by the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association.

At St. Thomas Aquinas elementary school staff, students and parents celebrated their "gold status" certification by having a family picnic.

St. Thomas chose physical activity as their health topic.

Throughout the year, activities and strategies were implemented using the schools community's assets.

Principal Frank Lacaria said they made physical activity a top priority as it has a positive effect on children’s overall health.

St. Bernard, St. James and Hammarskjold high school also received certifications. Over one-hundred schools across the province were designated as heathy schools.
