Plans not to heat Fort Frances mill leaves Resolute with fire code violation notice

FORT FRANCES, Ont. -- The Fort Frances Fire Department has issued orders to the owners of the Fort Frances Mill claiming not heating the mill is in violation of the Ontario Fire Code.

FORT FRANCES, Ont. -- The Fort Frances Fire Department has issued orders to the owners of the Fort Frances Mill claiming not heating the mill is in violation of the Ontario Fire Code.

Fire Chief Frank Shepherd says Resolute can heat the mill to ensure its fire prevention system operates properly, or it can go to the province and appeal that order.

“If they choose not to (heat the facility) then they have a right of appeal, which says we just don’t agree with your determination and we believe we can do this without anything else,” explains Chief Shepherd.

“Or they can go to a third party well versed in fire protection engineering and then provide a solution that ensures the safety aspects are being dealt with.”

Shepherd says he is optimistic and Resolute appears to be interested in co-operating.
