Waterfront skating pond to open this weekend, other outdoor rinks expected Dec. 14

THUNDER BAY -- As cold days and even colder nights continue, city parks staff are continuing their work toward getting outdoor skating rinks open.

The boards are up, and soon these muddy patches will be a smooth icy surface. A parks employee was busy flooding both rinks at Kinsmen Park Friday afternoon.

City Parks Manager Paul Fayrick says the goal is to have the priority rinks open to the public by Dec. 14.

Fayrick says the opening day will be dependent on the weather.

If we get a significant snow fall, it may take more time to get the ice ready.  Fayrick says having a cold streak over the last couple weeks has helped the process.

Fayrick says they're on pace with previous years for opening the rinks.

Meanwhile, the popular skating rink at Prince Arthur's Landing is scheduled to be open to the public starting Saturday.
