THUNDER BAY -- Police say a 14-year-old was behind the wheel of a car that slammed into a hydro pole on Chippewa Road early Sunday morning that has resulted in “very serious” injuries.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. when the black car he was driving westbound at a high rate of speed left the road and collided with the pole, which snapped but wires remained on broken and did not hit the ground.

There were four male passengers of similar ages in the vehicle with police describing injuries as ranging from very serious to minor.

Thunder Bay Hydro crews expect to remain on the scene for much of the day. Traffic on the route from Highway 61 to the Fort William First Nation has been reopened to one lane.

Police say charges are pending.
