THUNDER BAY -- The Fort William First Nation has started an online petition in hopes of re-opening the James Street Swing Bridge to vehicular traffic.

It's been 13 months since a major fire closed the Swing bridge to vehicular traffic.  The petition website says the First Nation believes no further delays in taking action to reopen the bridge can be justified.

With winter now upon us, Fort William First Nation officials say there will be many safety impacts with the continued closure, including emergency vehicles and school buses which have to take the detour along Highway 61.

The petition is targeting executives of CN, including their shareholders and all levels of government.

The goal is to get 1,000 signatures.

The First Nation and CN had a potential deal in the works in October to spend $3 million to repair and reopen the bridge to vehicles.

That deal fell apart when the City of Thunder Bay raised concerns about some of the conditions of the agreement.
