THUNDER BAY -- Safely driving through a Northern Ontario winter is about more than just checking your speed.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials on Wednesday morning used their Facebook page to remind drivers that, among other things, clearing the snow off your vehicle so you can see the road is important too.

In post titled “One of Our Officers Saw This Yesterday Morning,” city police shared a photograph of a snow covered pickup truck that had been driving along city streets during Monday’s snowfall.

“Somebody hasn’t been watching the local news or following us on Facebook,” the post’s author continues. “How does that commercial go? Fifteen minutes could save you … $100 in this case.”

The police service’s Facebook page has been filled with winter driving tips recently. Some of those tips include:

  • Give yourself an extra 10 to 15 minutes to clear ice and snow from your vehicle
  • Reduce your speed; give extra space between yourself and the motorist in front of you
  • Use lights whenever possible, especially when it is snowing
  • Low beams are more effective than high beams in heavy snow and fog
  • Never use cruise control in winter conditions
