WAWA, Ont. -- A union hopes it can help save the 55-year-old iconic landmark of this Northern Ontario town.
The Sheet Metal Worker’s Union wants to save the town’s giant Canada Goose, which is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the town to anyone who may drive through or past it.
The metal statue has become corroded to the point where it is now seen as a safety risk.
“They’ve been working for the last few months to raise funds to repair or replace the goose,” says Wawa mayor Ron Rody. “We’ve had an offer from the union to help assist us.”
He adds that the goose may have to migrate south for the rebuild.
Union members are confident that its plans will raise the money needed to build a new goose and have it back in Wawa by the Spring of 2016.
