THUNDER BAY –Traffic at a busy intersection was disrupted Sunday afternoon after a car knocked a light stand into the middle of the road.

The OPP say a single vehicle smashed with a traffic light post at the intersection of the Thunder Bay Expressway and Red River Road just after 1 p.m., sending the lights crashing onto the road and blocking traffic.

The stand was situated on an island on the Expressway on the east side of the intersection.

The intersection was closed to traffic as crews worked to clear the scene and clean up the damage.

OPP officials say there were minor injuries.

City police were briefly on scene, preventing northbound traffic from accessing Red River Road past the Junot Avenue intersection.

Traffic has since been reopened under OPP direction, though the left turn lane for eastbound access on the Expressway remains closed.
