Rafferty questions why flag isn't getting grander 50th anniversary celebration

THUNDER BAY -- A local MP believes the country’s flag deserves a bigger celebration ahead of its 50th anniversary.

THUNDER BAY -- A local MP believes the country’s flag deserves a bigger celebration ahead of its 50th anniversary.

John Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) says the federal government should spend more than the allocated $50,000 on celebrating the occasion.

The federal Conservatives had spent more than $4 million earlier this year to recognize the 200 years since the birth of founding father and first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald.

Rafferty said the maple leaf, which is now proudly seen on everything from sporting uniforms and other national symbols, is a national achievement worthy of being lauded.

The red and white maple leaf, which has become a symbol of the nation, was first proclaimed the nation’s flag on Feb. 15, 1965 by Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, replacing the Red Ensign.

Rafferty said he has heard constituents asking why there hasn’t been more emphasis on celebrating the flag.
