THUNDER BAY -- City police continue to investigate a domestic violence case that sent three people, including a young girl, to hospital with serious injuries.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to a 911 call, which came from a James Street South home just before 3 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene and discovered “multiple victims of violence.”Police say officers provided first aid to a 29-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter who had suffered serious injuries.

A baby boy was also discovered unharmed in a bedroom. He is now in the care of an agency.

Officers also subdued a 43-year-old man who was later identified as being an ex-husband of the 29-year-old woman.

The man appeared to have self-inflicted injuries. Police spokesman Chris Adams said a weapon was involved. Officials with Superior North EMS said the mother was stabbed, the child was slashed and the man was slashed along with self-inflicted injuries.

"We're not going to specify right now what the weapon was," he said. "It wasn't a firearm but we are looking as well at a forensic investigation at the scene."

It's too early to tell if the man was the father of the children, whether he was known to police or if alcohol was a factor as the Criminal Investigation Branch continues to work the case. It's also not known what charges the man will face as he is being stabilized in hospital.

First and foremost Adams said, it's important that the mother and children are now safe and expected to survive.

"That's all being determined right now," Adams said.

Violence at the scene was traumatic. Adams credits officers who were able to give quick first-aid and subdue the man. It was a matter of life or death.

"Their very quick action when they arrived at that scene as far as providing first aid was critical in saving the lives of the two victims," Adams said.

"It's a very tough situation for the officers to deal with."
