MARATHON – Two families received keys to their new homes on Saturday.

Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay officially announced the completion of the two homes in Marathon, the first builds the organization has conducted outside of Thunder Bay.

The recipients are Marley Malley and Lonna Beaulieu, two single mothers who said they would not otherwise be able to own a home.

“The cost of rent and heating used to be more than I could manage, but now I am on my way toward becoming a homeowner with reasonable expenses,” Malley said in a media release.

“My 10-year-old daughter has always dreamed of having a house with her own bedroom and a backyard to play in, and that dream has come true - for all of us.”

Diane Mitchell, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay, said building outside of Thunder Bay is a significant achievement for the organization.

“Building community connections is at the heart Habitat for Humanity, and the people of Marathon have been extremely supportive and welcoming of the families, the organization, and the entire process,” she said.

The materials and labour used to build the homes were donated and the two families will make geared to income payments on interest-free mortgages. Each family is required to complete 500 hours of volunteer labour.

The local Habitat for Humanity chapter has constructed 29 homes since 1994.
