Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds will take a run at federal politics.

Foulds on Tuesday announced he is throwing is name into the crowded Thunder Bay-Superior North race and will seek the NDP nomination.

If successful, he'll join Liberal Paty Hajdu and incumbent Green Party MP Bruce Hyer in what could prove to be a heated battle for the seat.

Foulds called it an exciting time to run, saying NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is standing up for Canadian values and beliefs.

"They have given me the hope and optimism that Jack Layton inspired in us all," Foulds said in a release.

"We need a vision for Canada that we can all aspire to. That is why I am seeking the federal nomination now. It is time for change. It is time for a better vision for Thunder Bay-Superior North and a better vision for Canada. I believe we can build both the Thunder Bay-Superior North and the canada we all want and deserve."

Foulds was unsuccessful last June running under the provincial NDP banner in the riding, losing to longtime MPP and Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle.

This is his first stab at federal politics.

Foulds said jobs, fairness for indigenous people, the environment, universal health care and affordable child care are the foundations of his party's vision for the future.

"The federal Conservative government has proven time and time again that it cares little for Northwestern Ontario, its future or its taxpayers. At this time, we need a strong voice to fight for Northwestern Ontario -- a fighter who will work hard to deliver both a vision for the North and concrete results," Foulds said. "I want to be that fighter who will work hard for the North."

Foulds was first elected to city council in 2006.

The federal election is scheduled for Oct. 19.
