THUNDER BAY – In light of a recent wolf attack that killed a dog, the Ministry of Natural Resources is advising residents on how to keep their pets safe.

A pack of wolves attacked two Australian shepherds in the front yard of a Kivikoski Road residence Thursday night, killing one and injuring the other.

Heather Pridham, a regional outreach specialist, said predators such as wolves and coyotes are most likely to target pets.

“Unfortunately small animals are seen as prey but that does not indicate a human safety risk,” she said.

To reduce your chances of wolf visits try the following:

  •  Keep dogs inside at night
  •  Clean up after dogs
  •  Keep dog food inside
  •  Spay and neuter dogs
  •  Build a fence at least two metres tall that is rooted at least 20 centimetres underground

While pets face the most substantial risk, she said people should express caution if they encounter an aggressive animal. The best thing to do is remain calm and not panic.

  •  Never approach the animal
  • Do not turn back to the animal or run away
  •  Back away slowly, waving arms and standing tall while making noise
  • Carry a flashlight at night
