THUNDER BAY -- A 42-year-old Thunder Bay man has been sentenced to four months in jail on child pornography charges.

Geoffrey Arden Filmore was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography in April 2014

On Tuesday, he was sentenced at the Thunder Bay Courthouse to four months in jail on the possession charge to be followed by 18 months of probation. The distribution charge was withdrawn.

The Thunder Bay Police Service's cyber-crime unit received alerts from Toronto and New Zealand law enforcement agencies saying they had chatted with a user at an East Arthur Street residence.

The address belonged to Filmore and a subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of a computer, USB drive, CDs and SD card.

Multiple images of child pornography were found in those files.

Filmore pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and the judge accepted the joint sentence submission of four months incarceration and 18 months of probation.

Terms of his probation include psychological treatment for his behaviour and other issues.

During submissions, Filmore’s lawyer David Young said his client suffered mental trauma serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.

When asked if he had anything to say to the court, Filmore said he wished he had received psychiatric help when first released from the military.

“Maybe my life would have turned out differently,” he said.
