UPDATE: Monday, Aug. 31 at 11:40 a.m.

THUNDER BAY – Two people involved in a major crash on Highway 61 Sunday evening have sustained “serious injuries,” police say.

Officials with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP continue to investigate the events leading up to the crash.

Police say the incident took place at about 8:15 p.m. on Highway 61 just north of Chippewa Road and involved three vehicles.

Members of the Thunder Bay OPP, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Superior North EMS responded.

Police say the driver of a Pontiac sedan was heading southbound on Highway 61 when the driver lost control of his vehicle and entered the northbound lane.

That driver then collided with a Mazda sedan, which led to that vehicle to crash into a Nissan sedan.

Two of the drivers needed to be extricated from their vehicles by fire and ambulance personnel.

All three drivers were transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. The man driving the Pontiac and the woman driving the Mazda are said to have suffered serious injuries.

There were no other occupants in the vehicles.

All of the vehicles sustained extensive damage.

The investigation continues.
