THUNDER BAY -- It's that time of year again when bears are preparing for winter and people are being reminded to bring in their garbage cans and clean up any apples on the ground.

A bear wandered onto Maplewood Street around 9 a.m. Tuesday where it was chased up a tree by police before being tranquilized and hauled away by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Thunder Bay Police Service Acting Sgt. Sean Shorrock said the bear, around 220 pounds, was first spotted by people walking along a path near Parkway Drive. While officers had their weapons and are trained to take safe shots if needed, he's glad it didn't come to that.

"This is the best end to this," he said as the bear slept in an MNR trailer.

Anyone who spots a bear can call the MNR's Bear Wise at 1-866-514-2327. It's also a good idea to call police as well if a bear is roaming through a residential neighbourhood.
