Police statement: District jail disturbance has been resolved

THUNDER BAY POLICE SERVICE MEDIA UPDATE

The disturbance at the District Jail on MacDougall Street has been resolved by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

The Thunder Bay Police were called to the jail just after 8 p.m. on Monday December 7, 2015 regarding a disturbance involving inmates at the facility.

A Corrections Officer had been taken hostage. TBPS officers including the Emergency Task Unit provided containment for the exterior of the facility. Incident command was established and MacDougall Street was closed to traffic during the incident. Officers from the O.P.P. were also on scene assisting with the containment. Superior North EMS and Thunder Bay Fire were also on scene to provide support.

TBPS officers assisted EMS in escorting three prisoners to hospital.

These individuals were injured while other inmates had control of a section of the jail. The prisoners were treated and released from hospital earlier this morning.

A Crisis Intervention Team from Correctional Services was able to resolve the incident. Information on the condition of the Corrections Officer who was taken hostage and the operation to restore order within the jail will come from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (Ontario).

The incident was resolved by 7:35 a.m. this morning. MacDougall Street should be open to traffic soon.
