THUNDER BAY -- City council will get a report on what happened to streets after a recent string of bad weather and how it can be better prepared in the future.

Coun. Trevor Giertuga said a temperature swing around Christmas brought rain that eventually turned to ice on roads and sidewalks in his McIntyre ward that stuck around for weeks before it was removed. He said the public deserves to know why it happened and know that it won't happen again.

"It was horrible. It was the worst I've ever seen the roads and they stayed like that for weeks,” he said.

He learned that the city only has one piece of equipment, called an ice blade, and one trained operator to deal with a situation like the one McIntyre and other parts of the city's North side saw. Administration said they are working on getting more equipment and trained employees.

Coun. Aldo Ruberto said he hopes councillors keep that in mind during budget deliberations, when a report on the situation is expected back, when administration asks for more resources to deal with weather events that might become more frequent in the coming years.

"Solutions cost money," he said.
