Nurses' association files grievance over staffing levels at Hogarth Riverview

THUNDER BAY -- St. Joseph's Care Group is facing more pressure for its staffing levels at the new Hogarth Riverview Manor seniors home.

THUNDER BAY -- St. Joseph's Care Group is facing more pressure for its staffing levels at the new Hogarth Riverview Manor seniors home.

This time, it's the Ontario Nurses Association criticizing what they call a severe lack of registered nurses at the brand new facility.
ONA has filed a grievance with St. Joe's saying the ratio of residents to registered nurses at Hogarth Riverview is far too low.
Since residents began to move in earlier this month, ONA officials claim there have been a number of occasions when there were no registered nurses on the premises at all.

Labour Relations Officer Michele Martin said the lack of nurses leaves residents at risk.

Members with Unifor and the local health coalition held a rally two weeks ago, regarding similar concerns about staffing levels at the new facility.

At that time, officials at St. Joe's confirmed the staffing ratio at Hogarth is about 10 or 11 residents per employee. However, they said the larger building is an opportunity to try different staffing models and said they're confident in their ability to provide proper care to the residents.
