THUNDER BAY -- The food bank for food banks is struggling to get people the food they need.

Regional Food Distribution Association executive director Volker Kromm said food donations were down about 25 per cent, $400,000, last year.

"That's a huge drop for us," he said.

With food costs on the rise, getting people the perishable food they need is also a challenge. It leaves families with no choice but to reach for more processed, less healthy food.

"What we're really missing is the high protein, the fruits," Kromm said,

"Which are also the ones that are expensive for families to acquire."

Even when the RFDA can get its hands on perishable food storing it becomes a challenge, especially in small communities in the region that don't have enough refrigeration space to hold it. Kromm said they're working hard to come up with creative solutions to their problems.

The RFDA did get some good news Friday as Renewable Energy Systems Canada signed on as a new corporate partner. Kromm said he's reaching out to corporations across Canada to try and help out.

"I'm anticipating a huge challenge," he said.
