THUNDER BAY -- Parents concerned about sex education program in a last ditch effort to rally for public support.
Eight families formed a motorcade protest through the streets on Saturday, their vehicles decorated with flags and signs opposing Ontario's new sex-education curriculum.
The rally was planned around schools sending letters home to inform families the new sex-education classes will be starting soon.
Protester Joanne Norlund-Carroll objected to the content as well as what she felt was lacking in the public consultation.
“We would like this to be pushed aside for now," Norlund-Carroll said.
"Parents were not properly consulted. It was a fake consultation with select parents chosen in each school board.”
The Liberal government reintroduced the program in 2015 that the party was forced to recined five years earlier due to public outrage, mostly from religious communities.
The reintroduction opposed a 185,000-signature petition against its plans to educate early grades about age-inappropriate subjects including masturbation, oral sex, and anal intercourse.
Norlund-Carroll hopes the rally will inspire parents to research what the board intends to teach their children.
“The curriculum is age-inappropriate. It’s too explicit and it nudges children towards premature sexual experimentation,” she said.
She advocates teaching students about responsible sex but she believes children shouldn't be taught to question their gender or sexual orientation.
