The Humane Society is scrambling to find new homes for more than 10 abandoned bunnies.
City of Thunder Bay animal services received a call late Thursday evening in regards to 15 abandoned bunnies that were found in the parking lot at Mission Island Marsh conservation area. The bunnies were brought to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society Saturday.
“We have never done an intake of bunnies in this number,” said Humane Society executive director Melanie Blanchette.
“They are a domestic breed of bunnies, so they would have never survived in the wild where they were dropped off.”
Several rabbits were in need of immediate vet care as they were missing their eyes and ears.
The majority of them have an upper respiratory infection.
“It hasn’t been determined whether or not it’s a case of bad breeding or purposeful cruelty,” Blanchette said.
“They could have been housed in close quarters together and they aggressively did this to one another.”
The Humane Society is housing the bunnies in an outdoor cattery until they find homes.
The cattery provides them with enough room to run around, but this isn’t an ideal situation for them long-term.
Blanchette said they are looking for a general donation for the adoption fee because at this point they just want to see them adopted.
The Humane Society would appreciate any information the public has regarding the neglect and abandonment of these animals.
Several of the bunnies have been deemed healthy and are up for adoption.
