Let's Eat: Rose Valley Lodge provides an enchanting getaway

The Rose Valley Lodge features a five-course meal with on-site accommodations

The Rose Valley Lodge property has a long history that begins at the start of the last century with Finnish settlers first establishing the farmstead.

In the 1970s it was briefly an Ashram/commune ended when most residents left to pursue other dreams but two stayed behind and began the Unicorn Inn.

Swiss hotelier Markus Hofmann first visited the property in the late 1990s. The timing was perfect, with the Unicorn Inn owners looking to sell, and in 1998 Rose Valley Lodge was established.

When Hofmann took over, he renovated the dining room and added the sunroom and built two log cabins for overnight guests. Last year they added two more guest cottages for a total of four cabins now.

Rose Valley Lodge’s website makes it easy to book a dinner reservation or cottage online.

“The whole thing is an experience, it’s not only cooking. It’s slow dining," Hofmann says. "Your inclusive five-course meal start at 7:00 p.m. and you’ll probably leave by 9:30 p.m. or so.”

Rose Valley is out of range for cell service and offers minimal electronics in their accommodations, creating a quiet place to detox from technology and absorb the natural surroundings.

Visitors can explore the property and farm. The horses, the cows and chickens are all part of what makes Rose Valley an enchanting getaway for locals and visitors to the region.

Hofmann sees a lot of regular visitors year after year.

“You have a relationship with them and look forward to their visits to catch up like friends, we are very grateful to our clientele,” he says.

Rose Valley Lodge has become a popular wedding venue, with bookings stretching into 2025.

“We restrict it now to four tent weddings a year in order for us not to be closed to our regular clients."

It’s hard for Hofmann to pinpoint a favourite on the five-course menu.

“It’s an experience, it’s something you plan ahead for, special occasions like a birthday or anniversary.”

The charming setting, disconnected from the city, makes a beautiful getaway.
