Cause unknown in cement truck fire

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue finds two cement trucks ablaze in Island Drive bridge area Friday evening

THUNDER BAY - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue continues to investigate the cause of an Island Drive bridge area blaze after two cement trucks caught fire in the area Friday evening.

Firefighters say although a large amount of smoke was visible for a long distance, finding an access road to the site delayed suppression efforts. When an access route was discovered, the first pumper arrived to find two cement trucks on fire.

One had a burning engine compartment, while tires on both had caught fire with at least one exploding. Responding with five pumpers and an aerial ladder, responders managed to knock down the flames and put out the fire.

No one was injured in the incident, Fire Rescue said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking any witnesses with information to contact them at (807) 625-2105.
