THUNDER BAY — The Salvation Army's 2023 Christmas Kettle campaign in Thunder Bay has achieved its goal.
As of Wednesday, community donations this year totalled just over $261,000, narrowly surpassing the objective of $260,000.
In a statement, the Salvation Army said it's grateful for the strong support the campaign received, adding that this is an indication of the confidence that donors and volunteers have in the organization.
"They have entrusted us to care for those in Thunder Bay who are not able to manage on their own. The Salvation Army is committed to honouring this trust," the release reads.
Funds collected through the campaign will be used in the coming year to maintain services such as the mobile meal program that supports 50 to 240 people per night, acquiring items for the Salvation Army food bank that distributes almost 400 hampers monthly, a school nutrition program for up to 135 students a day, and emergency shelter services.
As the economic downturn continues, the Salvation Army is seeing growing numbers of people reaching out for help.
"This has been a difficult year for everyone," said Gary Ferguson, executive director of community and residential services.
"We recognize that especially this year, it is a sacrifice for many to give, both financially and of their time. We say thank you again for helping us to continue our services in the community."
Donations to the kettle campaign will continue to be accepted but must be received by midnight Dec. 31 or postmarked Dec. 31 in order to qualify for a 2023 tax receipt.
