Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services respond to diesel tankers fire

SHUNIAH – Fire crews were on scene early Monday morning responding to a diesel tanker that had caught on fire.

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services were called to Highway 11/17 to respond to a diesel tanker that had caught on fire Monday, just after 3 a.m.

When crews arrived on the scene, they saw the rear B-train diesel tanker smoking from the rear axle, which the metal was glowing from the extreme heat. An Ontario Provincial Police officer, the first to encounter the tanker, used a fire extinguisher to cool down the metal, but the axle kept reigniting.

Nine Shuniah Fire and Emergency service firefighters, Ontario Provincial Police and Superior North EMS successfully cooled the axle with water to ensure no re-ignition would occur. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services would like to thank the officer for their quick work containing the fire before it became potentially catastrophic. They would also like to thank the truck driver separated the tanker from the rest of the vehicle before the emergency crew arrived.
