CALGARY -- Five Thunder Bay athletes recorded some outstanding performances at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games 2024 in Calgary last week.

Classical Nordic skier Noah Filice led the local contingent with a gold medal in the 5K event and silver in the 1K and 2.5K races.

Fellow skier Justin Campbell added a silver and bronze.

Five-pin bowler Vance Montgomery earned a bronze medal and his teammate Robert Whitehurst placed fifth overall. Montgomery and Whitehurst were in the team event where Ontario placed fourth, narrowly missing the bronze medal. Figure skater Nadine Simmons turned in a strong performance and finished fifth overall in the singles category.

“Special Olympics Thunder Bay is extremely proud of our athletes who represented us and performed so well on the national stage,” said SOTB special events coordinator Denita Minoletti.

The Calgary Games will serve as a qualifier for the Special Olympics World Games to be held next year in Turin, Italy.

Thunder Bay hosted the previous Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in 2020.
