THUNDER BAY – Free compost is now available at the city’s solid waste and recycling facility – while quantities last and weather permitting.
“With the mild weather this spring, residents have been awaiting the opening of our compost pick-up,” said Jason Sherband, manager – solid waste and recycling services, in a media release on Thursday.
“The leaf and yard waste that comes in from our curbside collection programs is blended with organic waste, and then composted to create a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns.”
Access to the compost pick-up area is located east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Residents bringing garbage, recycling and/or hazardous household waste should dispose of these items at the solid waste and recycling facility on Mapleward Road first, before visiting the special compost pick-up area.
Make sure to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry your free compost home. Quantities are limited to a maximum of one half-ton load per resident.
