Opportunities Northwest Job Fair connects hundreds with potential employers

With so many people looking for work in the Northwest, and much of the search taking place online, employers were thrilled to be able to meet potential hires face-to-face.

THUNDER BAY – The Opportunities Northwest Job Fair, organized by Dougall Media, returned on Thursday for its third year with a solid start to the day-long event.

Hundreds of area residents showed up on Thursday. Nancy Milani, event consultant, said people were lined up outside the door waiting for the job fair to start.

“We have started out with a bang, let me tell you. The rooms are packed already,” she said.

“This year we have over 90 employers, everything from health, construction, mining, education, and retail. From summer jobs, contract jobs, full time, permanent, a little bit of everything is here today.”

With so many people looking for work in the Northwest, and much of the employment search taking place online, employers in attendance were thrilled to be able to meet potential hires face-to-face.

“A lot of people might be unsure on how to apply or what's the best way to apply - so I think it's important to talk to people face-to-face and give them instructions on what to do. Some people wouldn't be aware of our company if we weren't here,” said James Carlos, ground control engineer at Barrick Gold.

“You know, not everyone's aware of the companies that are a little bit further away from Thunder Bay so it's nice to get the other communities involved.”

The job fair is running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Valhalla Hotel and Conference Centre in Scandia, the ballroom, and the ballroom lobby. Some of the companies are pre-screening potential hires and even doing hiring and interviews onsite.
