A potential strike by support workers at Confederation College continues to loom over the campus, as students are set to return to class in about two weeks.

Support staff across the province filed a five-day notice to strike by Sept. 1 if an agreement is not reached. On Friday, an offer was presented to the union, including wage increases for all employees.

OPSEU Local 731 support staff in Thunder Bay has 230 workers who are responsible for registration, running several labs and many other services within the college.

Staff members are looking for wage increases, pensions, and job security.

If an agreement is not reached, the college would be open, but student schedules may be disrupted.

Confederation College President Jim Madder said he's confident a deal will be reached. But if workers do hit the picket lines, he said the students’ education will not be affected.

Across Ontario there are more than 8,000 support staff workers in 24 colleges.

Bargaining is expected to continue early next week, in advance of the Sept. 1 strike date.

1) This is support staff, not faculty. 2) Support staff have not been on strike since the 70s.

What else is new? Support workers doing basic clerical work who are paid more than the vast majority of students will ever earn after graduation, and have excellent benefits, are demanding more.

Might I suggest this: every time we give college or university staff raises, it comes directly from students' pockets. Government funding is capped on a per student basis, so the additional cost is right out of the students pockets.

I'm waiting when these so called "UNION" people retire and need their union's help for a problem to have reality kick in .. there is none.. I am an unfortunate retired member from CEP and they don't give a damn about you ONCE YOUR RETIRED... not one bit. I'm not lining the top boys pockets anymore with the automatic rip-off BIG Union Dues I had to pay. I had to work in the Union that was a condition of employment .. there are NO RIGHTS THERE. Get your thinking caps on people DO NOT PUT UP a picket line .. but do keep negotiating it works.
