The international campaign to arrest accused Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony has come to Thunder Bay.

The advocacy group Invisible Children Inc. started the campaign to bring Kony to justice with a short 30-minute documentary went viral on YouTube earlier this month. Kony is the head of a Ugandan guerrilla group called the Lord’s Resistance Army and is accused of war crimes.

As of Saturday, the film has had more than 80 million viewers and the hashtag “#stopkony” has exploded on Twitter.
But the hashtag wasn’t just online.

At some point during the week, the word “Kony” was painted on stop signs across the city. All the stop signs at the intersection of Pine Street and Van Norman Street had the word “kony” painted on as well as some of the signs near Bay Street.

Many Facebook users also expressed those feelings on the Thunder Bay Kony 2012 page.

Jessica Lansdell posted that after watching the video he had trouble going to sleep.

“This needs to be addressed,” Lansdell wrote. “Imagine a world where we actually have the power to end these things through social media. Crazy thought.”

The Facebook group also posted an upcoming event scheduled for April 20. The event advises people to paint and put up posters to spread the message of Kony 2012.

Well, let's find a better way of spreading the word than graffiti on our public streets. Tsk, tsk.

none of these people were worried when blood diamond came out...

There's 100s of people like Kony, and Syria has it wayyy worse..

Just people getting on a bandwagon trying to have an important opinion on something, too much school.

normally i would agree with you.. however just watched the video and after watching i say have the message on every single stop sign in this fair city!!

elvis2010 says:
How about let's not have these on all our stop signs! Who's gonna pay to have these fixed? Why should we all be on the hook for this? If you agree with their message than YOU pay for a sign and place it in your front yard just like during elections. You don't see people running around painting stop signs with whoever they want to vote for at election time! Find out who is doing this and send them the bill!

@countrychick

So you watched a 30 minute video and now we should plaster our city with this?

Did you become a vegetarian after the meat is murder PETA videos?

Most people surrounding this Kony bandwagon couldn't even point to Uganda on a map.

combatwombat says:
well ok spraying stop signs maybe isnt the best but , Wow your logic befuddles me !! Honestly does one need to be able to point at uganda on a map, or perhaps what the ugandan flag looks, or state the annual GNP of the country??
how about a simple ,stop a guy who is doing bad things to people ...is that OK?

Too much school? Really? Let's see...what's the opposite of that ...too much ignorance...

Ignorance is the foundation of racism and the breeding ground of tyranny...

Yes, there are many situations needing our attention...it's nice to know that youth are caring about at least one of them...something of an awakening...
3/17/2012 3:05:30 PM
tiredofit says:
Big Joe, I suggest that if you research, you'll find that the youth of today are well aware of several hundred issues, this is but one. This is an excellent case of the youth utilizing social media to inform the world and it's working well I'd say.

Racism has nothing to do with this.

Ok, bring racism and other issues in to cloud a discussion, nice going.

Clearly you misunderstood a point.

If your going to Kony, you need to be able to locate Uganda on a map first.

@codvx87 as a matter of fact i can and i know someone personally from that country!! I admire that a group of people have taken a very important cause and through sheer determination has created a global effort to take down this monster! What if it was one of your children or a canadian child?? What just because this happened in another country we should just turn a blind eye because it does not effect us??

Delbert Grady says:
I guess Im going to have to go around and spray paint the word "don't" on top of all these signs.

What a moronic thing to do. A bunch of leftists following a public disgrace's propaganda video and now I gotta help pay to clean up their stupidity?

What has this city come to?

passlake says:
I started to care, then I realized that there are people in my own back yard (eg. NWO) that are suffering and need my help. I can do a lot more good in the world if I worry about tbay and surrounding area and make a difference here, rather than grafitti stop signs (with the new by-law does the city pay itself $50 to help cover costs of re-painting the signs????) for a cause that's 1/2 a world away.... through volunteering or united way or what-not...

Is Kony bad? sure.. but I have better things to worry about. He'll get his day. No man is an island, but some are Kony islands... mmm.. Coney dog..

This Kony BS is just the "flavor" of the week in the store of "causes".. This has been going on for years and now it's just come to everyones attention? This shows just how ignorant the people are on world events.. What about Darfur, et., etc.? The punks who vandalize city property are just using this as an excuse to do so..

i am all for bringing pieces of trash like joseph kony to justice, but take a look at the you tube video that highlights where the money collected by invisible children inc is distributed. before you make a donation to this group know that most of that money will go to pay the salaries of the people running it.
3/17/2012 9:36:30 PM
tiredofit says:
Jasper, I'm sure they are taking a minimal amount to help keep them in food, housing etc... I'm sure it's nowhere near what executives of agencies like the Unite Way etc.. are taking, (well over the $100k mark!!). There is absolutely nothing wrong with them trying to survive while they fight the battle.
I made a $20 donation and if even 50% is used to help them eat and survive, it's worth the battle this group is fighting!

ThePeople says:
First question: Who knew who Kony was before the video exploded? Not me, and that is the issue. If someone is able to commit crimes against humanity for almost 30 years without anyone knowing who they are then that is the real problem here.

Second question: Just because there has been controversy surrounding the group invisible children should we then just dismiss that Kony is a violent criminal who should be stopped? I would say no, it doesn't matter that Kony hasn't been in Uganda since 2006 because he isn't going to stop doing what he does. Which is kidnapping children forcing them to murder and forcing them into the sex trafficking industry. What part of that sounds right to you?

I don't care who does it, but a criminal like Joseph Kony should be brought to justice. And if it takes a 30 minute youtube video to tell the world about this man then so be it. This is all about awareness, and people are starting to be aware.

I admit that the video sucked me in. My teenage kids were overwhelmed. To them, this was history in the making. It was impressive to get 80million viewers in a short time.

But after reading that $30million dollars hasn't made it to Uganda, or that the producer of the film was got doing a George Micheal/PeeWee Herman Friday, my perception has changed.

The internet can be a powerful tool. But be careful with that power.

1) Using "guerrilla" tactics to spread a message can be effective if it's done in a way that respects public and private property. Defacing signs and property will only bring more negative vibes to a cause that is already riddled with criticism.

2) Most people would agree that Kony should be stopped and that raising awareness to stamp out mass atrocities is good. BUT, our society has been transformed into an “I-saw-it-on-the-TV/news/Internet-therefore-it-must-be-true” culture where critical thinking doesn’t seem to exist anymore. Do some research on Invisible Children and see what type of organization it is before jumping on the bandwagon. Do some investigating and see what Ugandan and other African/int’l scholars are saying about the video before buying the $30 “action kit.” Too often we become lazy and believe mass media & hype. There are other important lessons to be learned through the Kony video, and learning to think critically is definitely one of them.

divastarbabyy says:
So while people care about Kony and all, people need to realize that watching a 30 minute video with a child crying IS going to evoke emotions. They call that catharsis. The leader of the Kony video was arrested for publicly masturbating (great guy to follow, right?) And if you research Invisible Children, they only donate 30% of their millions to the actual cause. Second of all, if you are preaching that video you are supporting the American military to invade yet another country that is not theirs. Third, if people actually cared so much, they wouldn't be funding companies like Nike, etc, because they too enslave children to do their bidding. My point is that it's actually pretty sad that this video got such a strong reaction when it could have been used to focus on other problems... like the ones in our city, making a better community. Not stopping a guy who IS NOT EVEN IN UGANDA anymore, & hasn't done anything for 6 years.

Makes you wish people possessed more intelligence weren't so easily influenced by Internet videos.

Before the movie 2012 how many people even heard of the Mayan calendar?

Somebody makes a decent quality video of a dictator, gets a couple celebrities to tweet it and the sheeple take up a new cause. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Not saying this cause isn't important but there are many, many more important causes and many more closer to home that could use extra attention.

But no, keep painting our stop signs and perhaps city council will put forward a motion to send our local militia to Uganda to take out Kony.

Glyder says:
Hmmm, the conspiracy theorist in me has to wonder at how quickly the issue has changed. Just to be playful, look at all the attention the video has received, and all of a sudden, its gone, and on to the director. Who, just out of nowhere breaks down and runs naked and going crazy. Attention diverted. Very Robert Ludlum like...interesting.

I can't believe people are falling for this propaganda to raise awareness so that the government can get into Uganda under this movement to get their OIL!!!!!!!!! Wake up people and do your research, you can't believe everything on youtube!!!
