Canadian Blood Services has announced that it is closing the Thunder Bay Plasma Centre.

New replacement products and a drop in hospital demand were cited as the reasons for the closure.

All 28 full- and part-time employees at the centre will lose their jobs.

“As a not-for-profit organization funded by the provincial and territorial governments, the expectation is to provide a safe and efficient service aligned with the needs of our hospital customers,” The Plasma Centre’s Chief Operating Officer, Ian Mumford, is quoted as saying in a news release issued late Thursday afternoon.

“While maintaining the same level of safety, this change allows Canadian Blood Services to better match those needs.”

The agency says other options for the site were reviewed, but a sustainable option for the plasma program was not deemed possible.

The centre will remain open until April 12.
