Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief reminded Prince Charles on Tuesday of the treaty obligations the British government signed with First Nations people.

Beardy met briefly with the visiting prince in Toronto, part of the latest royal visit to Canada. Beardy used the occasion to hand Prince Charles a copy of Treaty No. 9 – Making the Agreement to Share the Land in Far Northern Ontario in 1905.

The heir to the British throne looked through the book, and responded he is well aware of the treaty responsibilities and was looking forward to meeting with other First Nations leaders during the rest of his Canadian visit in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee.

“It is very important that we strengthen the treaty relations between the people of Treaties 9 and 5 and the Crown,” Beardy said in a release issued by NAN. “It is because of treaty relations that allows third parties access to our natural resources.”

Several First Nations in Northern Ontario are up in arms about Cliffs Natural Resources’ decision to locate its planned ferrochrome processing plant near Sudbury instead of Thunder Bay or the Greenston area.

not to start a war or anything but I think both treaty obligations and royal families should be scrapped so we can get with the modern times...

TBDR says:
You scrap the treaties and it would be yet another broken promise to First Nations. Don't forget, it was us that pressured them into signing the treaties not the other way around. The treaties are valid for as long as the sun rises. That was the government's choice, not theirs.

Treaties are not going away. Why not just settle them in fairness to the First Nations. We continue to battle against them so vigorously only to spend more money and so much time....This should have been settled well before I was a twinkle in my fathers eye...yet almost 50 years later, we are still holding the line and saying no....like TBDR stated.. we made them sign it....lets honour it and move on...

Way to much free PR time for Beardy on his bid to be Regional Chief , time to do something useful like getting NAN communities on the same page for the Ring of Fire Project .

Wonder if Charles thinks this guy is a total joke like every1 else does??

You can see the forest for the trees on this one!

How could Prince Charles possibly give a toss about the treaty when it is presented in this photo op??

He is here for ceremony only, not for a controversial photo op, to sort out the "Ring of Fire" issues!

Blatant PR move!

The Royal Family has actually made more effort to understand aboriginals than the government seems to. It is unfortunate that the Crown put the Government in charge of managing treaty rights for them.

That treaty is, after all, an agreement between chiefs like Stan Beardy and the Crown, currently worn by the Queen and soon to be worn by Prince Charles.

The prince was likely asking who that dude was trying to give him a book.

metisman, as a Metis you must realize that you do not have treaty rights.

Does one have to be treaty in order to advocate treaty rights? That attitude sure explains a lot in this forum. Thanks for clearing that up.

p.s. metisman, I am proud of my Métis heritage. my maternal grandmother was 100% FN from Northern Ontario, and my paternal grandmother was 100% FN from Northern Manitoba. My parents raised me in Thunder Bay (Fort William), and taught me respect, equality and tolerance for everyone. Will you do the same?

Who cares if any of you believe Stan has ulterior motives, does anyone in this forum have any real understanding of treaty rights? How they were established and what is means today? Based on the never ending belly aching and tiresome misconceptions that trails any story regarding any First Nation issue, my guess would be no. I challenge you to read this book (or any book for that matter) as a start to understanding the REAL issues surrounding treaty rights as an alternative to the biased, unfounded opinions that continue to be posted on this website in very bad taste.
Darn it, I just wasted my breathe didn't I? Sigh.

@wayne- did you actually read my comments. Obviously I am proud of my aboriginal heritage that goes back more than a hundred years. My whole point was our leaders of today are responsible for holding up the promises made in the past. If they had carried through with these treaties and promises back in the day or even 50 years ago, prejudices and bad feelings would likely be a distant memory. Your comments infer that I am not speaking of equality, respect or tolerance...once again I reiterate, read my comments and think before you make such a ill-thought out response.
