A seven-way race for the position of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation’s grand chief has begun.

With former chief Stan Beardy now leading the chiefs of Ontario at the Assembly of First Nations, NAN will be choosing a new grand chief for the first time in 12 years.

Chiefs and proxies from its 49 communities will vote next month at the 31st Keewaywin NAN Chiefs Assembly in Kashechewan First Nation. The candidates are Lawrence Martin, David Neegan, Doug Semple, Harvey Yesno, Terry Waboose, Brian Davey and Mike Metatawabin.

There are also six candidates for NAN’s three deputy grand chief positions.

Those nominees are: Goyce Kakegamic, Theresa Hall, Alvin Fiddler, Les Loutitt, Walter Navaeu and Pierre Morriseau.

The campaign runs until August 15.
