The forest fire risk for this region remains at high, and officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources expect it to stay that way throughout the weekend.

MNR fire information officer Heather Pridham told CKPR Radio Friday that there are now 70 active forest fires confirmed in the Northwest region.

“We have had dry lightning,” Pridham said. “Dry lightning is the type of lightning that still strikes, but there is very little or no rainfall associated with it.”

She added that storms that feature dry lightning will ‘almost certainly’ cause new forest fires.

Pridham also said that fires burning near the Sandy Lake area have not led to smoke concerns for the community’s in the area, but a shift in the wind could change that.
