Chiefs near Ring of Fire not seeing eye-to-eye on evictions

A pending eviction notice to mining companies with interest around the Ring of Fire is causing divisions among Matawa First Nation communities.

Six of the nine Matawa First Nations are supporting a plan to evict several mining companies from the area.

Neskantaga First Nation Chief Peter Moonias says the group is still preparing to take the next step, and he says people are starting to realize that the government is lying about their consultations.

But Chief Eli Moonias from Marten Falls, one of the Matawa communities opposed to the eviction, has a different viewpoint.  Eli Moonias said he believes they have achieved consultation and the main operator, Cliffs Natural Resources, is now ready to discuss a memorandum of understanding.

The Marten Falls Chief added that it is First Nation leaders who are the ones now showing disrespect, and resolution of the matter is being pushed forward despite strong opposition.

He said everyone has jumped on the eviction bandwagon, without asking why Marten Falls if its leadership is opposed to it.

The FN each have their own issues and concerns. The problem for years has been approaching those issues with a cookie cutter approach .
To assume that what works in one place will automatically work in another is wrong.
Eli Moonias obvious sees more benefits working with Cliffs than the endless fight to stop development

Media likes to blow these types of disagreements up. General public need to understand that not all the Chiefs or communities will agree on everything. Its just the nature of politics when resource development, intergovernmental relations and business are involved. If Marten Falls is and some of the other communities are satisfied with their consultation then that is wonderful that they could move on to being accomodated. The fact still remains that is not the case for some of the other communities and they need to assert their First Nation Jurisdiction until their Treaty Rights are upheld. In time hopefully the government will do so, then choosing to favour certain communities and work with all.

This is all going to come to a conclusion soon....I am quite interested in the end result as it will mean many years of real employment for a lot of people.
Not just these stupid part time low pay jobs EI expects people to take when between jobs.
