Time ticking away for Disaster Relief Committee

Faced with a $4.19-million shortfall and time ticking rapidly toward a self-imposed Nov. 30 deadline, the city’s Disaster Relief Committee is hoping a grocery-store campaign will help catapult them closer to their $5-million fundraising goal.

Thunder Bay’s Metro and Quality Market locations will stage Loonie Days for Disaster Relief from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2., asking customers to contribute a dollar per purchase toward the cause.

Committee officials say it looks like they’ll need between $15 million and $20 million to cover the costs of claims arising from the May 28 flood and subsequent sewage back-up disaster that left thousands of people facing thousands of dollars in repairs and replacements.

The province will triple anything the DRC collects through two-for-one funding.

Brian McNamara, manager of the River Street Metro location, said the disaster hit close to home.

“We have a lot of staff that still have no basements or furnaces. The disaster affected so many people that there’s not enough construction guys in town. They’re pulling people from out of town to help fix up people’s basements and get people’s lives back together,” McNamara said.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to show that we’re part of the community – always have been – and will continue to do so.”

The money will be a welcome addition to the slowly growing coffers.

On average, the DRC needs to raise about $37,053 a day between now and the deadline, about $259,000 a week.

Last week they took in a mere $9,000.

McNamara said he’s got high hopes the two Metro locations and their customers can be huge contributors to the cause.

“Our customer count is high. We find people in Thunder Bay to be very generous people, so I anticipate this will be a very successful event,” McNamara said.

DRC co-chairwoman Lynn Peterson said every little bit helps.

“Every fundraising event is important to the campaign,” Peterson said. “As you know the number is large. The need is $15 million to $20 million, the expected damage claims. We need to raise $5 million, and I know it’s a big number, but also is based on need.

“The need is there, so it’s launched and it’s wonderful that local businesses are looking and certainly happy to help in any way they can. The Loonie Days launch is an opportunity for the business community to ask their customers.”
Other businesses interested in participating in Loonie Days for Disaster Relief can call the DRC office at 625-2686 between now and Aug. 24.

Me n My Opinion says:
Think of it this way. If the goal is not met, then it's likely the City will be funding it from municipal taxes. So instead of paying an extra $20 in taxes next year, donate $10, then the province will chip in $20. That way you've only paid $10 instead of $20, and more is going toward the relief effort.

PAY LESS - GET MORE. It doesn't happen like that very often.

Now the DRC is saying $15M to $20M. Loonie days will raise very little. The DRC is a disaster!

3,000 homes flooded, and you don't help your community because of a grudge against one of the fundraisers?

Says more about you than your statement says about Peterson.

Oh boy....is this the best that this committee can come up with to date....including collecting money each and every Wednesday nigh down at the summer in the parks at the marina....if so the needed funds will never be raised!

The term given in this article "slowly growing coffers" sure hits the nail on the head....but what else would they expect with this type of fundraising ideas.????

Looks like this is going to yet another EPIC FAIL here in Thunder Bay....not like it is a first here bye the way.!!

I would like to see more people stepping up to the plate with fundraisers... I've seen a few music ones and the big one by Dougall Media, but otherwise its been relatively quiet. The city (notice thats a small c)should be stepping up in a big way right now and helping out. 36 bucks from every man woman and child would do it... obviously some can't but there are many who could probably do 360 or 3600...

The DRC should be catapulted.

Other areas of the province get monies immediately and don't need to go through this dog and pony show our city with its star studded committee in order to secure funds for the flood victims.
What people are realizing is this, they are not going to donate to a group of people are simply suing the citizens of this city, including themselves which will later result in a mega tax hike.
Rise above hate.

So last week they fell short $250K of the average.

Combined five Metro and Quality Market locations. 3 days for loonies. $37K per day is what DRC needs on average. that works out to $111K ($22.2K per store). let's assume that at best, 1 in 2 customers donate a loonie. that translates to 14,800 customers visiting each of the five stores per day. the point being it aint gonna happen!

I have already donated time, money, goods and services to the flood relief before the DRC came along. It's sad that they are pinning their hopes on these loonie days catapulting them closer to their goal. Epic Fail!

Sui Generis has a point in not holding a grudge because you don’t agree with one of the committee members, but Sui states 3,000 homes were flooded. Yes, that may be the case but the DRC is only helping those with no or limited insurance. My question is: has more than 6 claimants come forth since their last news conference begging people to put a claim in. The coordinator that they hired is going to earn her money.
8/9/2012 10:32:26 PM
Sui Generis says:
Um ... there has been hundreds of claimants for the disaster relief advance, and there will be hundreds more for the full claim due at the end of October. You're getting your news stories mixed up.

And yes, the disaster relief helps those with no insurance. So here's an example for you. I am a tenant. My landlord did NOT have insurance. I am now heading into colder weather without a furnace. Those donations will help my kids from freezing to death this winter.

But by all means, those of you with a grudge against a past mayor, withhold your donations. My kids, and hundreds more like us, much worse off than us, don't mind suffering for your pettiness.

I do not understand why the city can not put in some money.(more then the 500,00) I am sure there is money that can be taken out of the citites own "personal pet projects". Example; The marina, and what ever else money they have stashed away, and help these people out. After all, its the least the city can do.

The DRC is encouraging any business in town to also hold Loonie days - I think the point of this was to launch the program with 2 businesses already on board - in hopes that other companies in town will do the same.

I have also read that the DRC is doing alot of behind the scenes fundraising and have approached every municipality in Ontario, along with big companies, to donate to the fund.

84% of the fundraising target to go!

question. how many actual houses were affected, didn't have insurance and have submitted claims?

because if only 6 people have put in claims (probably higher, but does anyone know how many?), then 2.4 million (800k raised plus $1.6 mil matched by ONT) is more than enough to fix these houses.

then again, if 1500 people have put in legitimate claims, I might be more inclined to donate something.. but at this point a flood that "left thousands of people facing thousands of dollars in repairs and replacements" isn't enough information for me to make a decision.

Potso says:
The number 6 that keeps getting referred to is the people who are involved in the lawsuit. I remember reading here back in July when the emergency forms for funding were submitted that the number of claims was around 600 but I know a number of people who did not require the $1000 emergency funding and will only be submitting the damage claim form that is due at the end of October. One only had to drive down May/Fort William Rd and look down the side streets to see the number of homes impacted. There was stuff piled high in almost every front yard. I also went to the East End to make a donation of food and clothing and the amount of damage was significant. Just the memory of that makes me believe that there are easily thousands of people affected. Sure some had insurance but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people didn't because of past flood claims and were dropped by their insurance company. We need to help these people rather than make ignorant comments about committee members!

thanks for clarifying where the "6" comes from..

but still... anyone know how many?
8/10/2012 4:15:16 PM
YQTite says:
I don't think they'll know for sure how many people are affected until the October 31 deadline for claims is completed. I would suspect that the city came up with an estimate on the damage total based on the advanced claims filed, the people who registered with the Red Cross and safe homes.

Perhaps, citizens of this city have finally reached their level of "donation fatigue" and are pulling back.

And I don't think "staging" the usual, "warm and fuzzy" media photograph/event is going to help the DRC.

Maybe Lynn can do some "busking" in front of the OLG Casino or appeal to those individuals, who are falling all over themselves, to buy Marina Condos?

These two groups seem to have "money to burn"!

TBDR, I think you need to switch 'some' and 'many' in your statement.

Many people in this city have given a lot in terms of money, time, goods and services etc.

It is time for the DRC to go after the big bucks from other municipalities and corporations like they promised. How about hitting up the sister cities?
8/10/2012 7:46:29 PM
wayne says:
with the current jobless rate at 6.1% and an estimated 15% of our city living below the poverty line, it will be tough to make up $4.19M through donations from residents.

And if the costs for flood relief end up being $20M, the actual amount the DRC needs to 'raise' isn't $5M but rather $6.67M. Assuming that the province will match 2 to 1, which the DRC itself stated is not a guarantee.

And according to Peterson, there is only $6M available from the province for flood relief.
