City council has given the federal government some direction in projects they would like to see funded.

Council voted to give five recommendations for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund at last night's regular scheduled meeting. The new fund provided by the federal government would support repairs and improvements as well as expansions of existing community infrastructures.

At the top of the list was Delaney Arena and Fort William Stadium. The recommendation listed the two arenas needed improvements to the parking lot areas, an expansion for concession preparation and new accessible washrooms.

Trails took second priority in order to replace and add new lighting in selected locations including Boulevard Lake, County Park, McVicar Creek and Lakehead University.

Other project recommended by council included a connection from Boulevard Lake to Trowbridge, Centennial and King Horn trails, two splash pads for North End Recreation Centre and James Street Playfield and improvements to Thunder Bay Transit bus shelters.

While those are valid projects, the city also needs to really get a good hold on streets.
Past administrations have neglected this area and now it has snowballed all at once.

City council has a splash pad addiction now it seems. With new ones being put up all around the city why would people bother making the trip to the marina for the splash pad there?

It is good to see that upgrades to exisitng facilities is the priority, NOT a MULTI-PLEX that we cannot afford. It's time this city put it's money into taking care of what we already have. What about the facilities at Boulevard? They could use an upgrade. What about a splashpad there and at Chippewa, as the water is often unsafe, and the beach too polluted with goose waste to step on.
Let's take care of what we already invested in.

what about sewer/water draining and the treatment plant that the mayor said was priority one just a few months ago? is it not a priority anymore?

thats not the type of funding that was applied for. Things like sewers are not covered by this fund

It is absolutely idiotic to request funding for things such as arenas and stadiums from the federal government under infrastructure funding, when so many other issues are not being addressed as apparent in the recent flood. In times of hard economic times (and sometimes even in good times) the federal government needs to fund and encourage the funding and upgrading of essential services. In Thunder Bay that should include water treatment plants, sewers and sewage treatment plants ( we should not be allowing anything but clean water back into the lake and that includes stormwater), major bridges and road upgrades and housing and building upgrades for energy conservation ( ie college and university buildings). Most other things may fall under the provincial and municipal governments but this is where the feds should be focusing the work.

we can't completely ignore recreation either.

we are lucky to have such great recreation facilities across our city; the boulevard to cascades green space, the marina, splash pads, rinks, golf courses, marina, chapples, outdoor pools, soccer fields and more.

It's hard to deny the benefits of activity, so I think this is money well spent.

Why more splash pads? County park still isn't running, and no signs of work...

Take a quick read of these upgrades and "wants". Where are they? 90% North Side of town.

Want to actually help with the crime rate? How about a splash pad on the South side? How about more and better or upgraded recreational trails?

You can try and move all the criminals away from the north side, but guess what? If you completely ignore the population on that side of town, crime will get out of control. I call for a more balanced spending approach. All of this is even assuming our sewers are ok, not to mention our awful crumbling roads etc.

There is a splash pad on the south side, down the street from the Gardens. But, I do agree with you that a few more couldn't hurt, and the rec trails are a great idea.
