THUNDER BAY -- The investigation into the fire that gutted a north-side home could conclude before Wednesday morning.

Early Monday morning, witnesses spotted smoke and flames coming from a Merrill Street home. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters brought the blaze under control quickly after arriving on scene, but say there was extensive damage in the home’s basement, which extended through to a main floor bathroom and bedroom.

There is also noticeable fire damage around the front door of the home.

All occupants of the home escaped without injury.

James Allen, an investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been brought in to assist with the investigation after the Thunder Bay Fire Department requested for help in determining the cause of the fire.

Allen said they are still in the process of determining the origin of the fire and that the home received heavy damage to the main floor with smoke and heat damage on the second floor and basement.
