DISTRICT OF THUNDER BAY -- The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has released a flood outlook statement.

DISTRICT OF THUNDER BAY -- The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has released a flood outlook statement.

The statement, released Wednesday afternoon, covers the City of Thunder Bay, Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah and the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.

“Warm temperatures in recent days have resulted in a significant melt of the snowpack,” the statement reads. “However, there is still above average snowpack in the upper watershed. Area watercourse have risen over the weekend and have mostly stabilized and are currently below bankfull conditions.

“Approximately 24 millimetres of mixed precipitation is forecasted (Thursday). Precipitation mixed with snow melt could lead to a rapid rise in area watercourses.”

The statement goes on to state that threat of localized ponding and flooding exists in low-lying areas, and that the public is advised to exercise caution around area waterways.

A flood outlook statement is meant to provide early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts and other conditions that could lead to high runoff or cause ice jams.

The Conservation Authority will continue to monitor conditions through its flood forecasting and warning program. Updates will be issued as they become necessary.
